There are many choices when it comes to air fresheners; from aerosols, to plug-in air fresheners, and pot pourri to diffusers. However, it’s likely that some of them may contain chemicals which may not be too good for us. Once you’ve bought the air freshener, you often then need to buy the refills, and this can often add up in price and can prove to be quite expensive. So whenever I want to use air freshener I make my own with the following ingredients:

For the home:

Time needed: less than 5 minutes

You will need:

  • 5-10 drops of essential oil(s)
  • A small amount of water
  • Small spray bottle – an empty perfume bottle works well; or
  • An empty diffuser bottle

Method:

Take the spray bottle and add 5-10 drops of essential oil(s) of your choice. Add a small amount of water and shake the bottle to mix the ingredients together. And spray around the room.

Tip tip: I only make a small amount at a time, and tend to use up what I make in a couple of days. This is because I don’t want the water to stand for a long period of time. If you wish to make a larger batch in one go, I’d recommend putting it in the refrigerator to keep it fresh.

For the wardrobe:

Time needed: less than 5 minutes

You will need:

  • Spray bottle with essential oils / water mixture
  • A coat hanger
  • A small produce bag
  • Reusable cotton wool pad(s)

Method:

Spray the cotton wool pad(s) with the essential oils spray from above. Put the cotton wool pad(s) in the produce bag, and hang them on a coat hanger. Then hang the coat hanger in your wardrobe. This will make you clothes smell great at a fraction of the cost!

The great thing about this is that the cost is minimal. I bought a number of essential oils for £1 each. I use them for cleaning as well as for making air freshener. They have lasted me almost since the beginning of the year, when I started my journey to zero waste and plastic free.
